Digital Atlas of Oklahoma -- Notes on the Transfer formats disc

Notes:

1. The use of trade names is for descriptive purposes only, and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
The Transfer formats disc is one of two versions of the Digital Atlas of Oklahoma. The Transfer formats disc contains map data sets in generic nonproprietary formats and a proprietary ARC/INFO1 export-file format for use with user-provided Geographic Information System software.

Data formats

The nonproprietary file format used depends on the type of data set. Some data sets require multiple files in different formats to completely transfer the information. Most data sets are provided in Digital Line Graph (DLG) Version 3, Optional format. Generally, line or polygon attribute tables that could be stored entirely in integer codes were included as major/minor codes in DLG files. The noninteger attributes for many of the DLG-format files are stored in related dBASE®-format files and may be joined to the data set polygon attribute or arc attribute tables using dBASE-compatible software. The dBASE-format files include fields that may be linked to the DLG major/minor codes for each feature. Point attribute tables are provided in dBASE format only, and include the X and Y map coordinates of each point. Annotation (text plotted in map coordinates) are provided in AutoCADTM Drawing Exchange format (DXF) files. The shaded-relief image is provided in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF), format, a binary image format commonly used in desktop publishing. The TIFF-format file uses the packbit compression algorithm. The shaded-relief image is stored in the "\DATA_ARC\A_SHDRLF\" subdirectory, and consists of two files: SHDRLF.TIF, the image file, and SHDRLF.TFW, the ARC/INFO world file.

All data sets except the shaded-relief image also are provided in ARC/INFO export-file format. All DLG-format files and ARC/INFO export-format files are compressed with GZIP and are stored in subdirectories of the \DATA_PD\ and \DATA_ARC\ directories. The DBASE-format and DXF-format files are not compressed on this disc.

The DLG format and ARC/INFO export files end with ".GZ" extensions and need to be uncompressed to access the digital data. The file "\GZIP\GUNZIP.EXE" is an MS-DOS executable program included on the disc that will uncompress the data files. To uncompress a file, type "GUNZIP -aN" and the file name. This will uncompress the file and restore its original name. For example:

GUNZIP -aN CENSUS.GZ

The text files on this disc are ASCII format files. The files use MS-DOS record delimiters (carriage return, line feed) to indicate the end of lines. Conversion of record delimiters in these ASCII files may be necessary for use with operating systems other than MS-DOS. A utility such as DOS2UNIX, the FTP file transfer utility, or a text editor may be used to convert the record delimiters. UNIX users may use the following perl script to convert the record delimiters:

#!/usr/bin/perl -pi.dosbak

s/\r\n$/\n/;

The table below lists the files included for each data set. If no attribute data file is listed, all attributes are included within the geographic coordinate file.

               organization. The \A_SHDRLF\ subdirectory is not
               included because the TIFF-format file provided in the

               with most GIS software.
