Digital Atlas of Oklahoma -- Notes on the ArcView disc

Notes:

1. The use of trade names is for descriptive purposes only, and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
The ArcView disc primarily is for personal computers (PC) without Geographic Information System software. The ArcView disc contains the viewer software, ArcView®1, Version 1.0 (referred to as ArcView 1) by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Inc. and allows the user to display any combination of data sets and attributes using selected colors and patterns. Spatial and logical queries also can be performed to locate a specific set of attribute characteristics.

Data formats on ArcView disc

This disc complies with the ISO 9660 standard for CD-ROM discs. The disc and data sets are readable with UNIX, Macintosh, and VAX computers equipped with the appropriate CD-ROM reader and software.

Except for the shaded-relief image, the data sets on this disc are stored in PC ARC/INFO coverage format. The shaded-relief image is stored in Band Interleaved by Line (BIL) image format, a generic format commonly used in image processing.

Getting started with the ArcView disc

The digital-map data sets on the disc containing ArcView 1 were designed to be used with the viewing software. ArcView 1 runs only under the Microsoft® Windows® 3.0 or 3.1 operating system. The method used for 32-bit protected-mode operation is not compatible with Microsoft® Windows® 95 or Microsoft® Windows® NT. The data sets on this disc are compatible with all versions of ArcView®.

Installation of ArcView 1 on a computer with Windows 3.1 requires approximately 17 megabytes of free space on the hard drive. ArcView 1 must be installed from the MS-DOS prompt, not from within Windows. To install, make the CD-ROM drive the active drive, type "INSTALL", and follow the instructions given by the program. Be sure to edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files as instructed.

Using ARCVIEW 1 on the ArcView disc

Once ArcView 1 is installed, the user is encouraged to go through the "Guided Tour," which is accessed from the question-mark icon in the ArcView 1 Windows program group. The sample view files ADDMATCH.AV, MAPLEWD.AV, and NEWENG.AV and associated data sets referred to in the guided tour are installed with the ArcView 1 software and appear as icons in the ArcView 1 Windows program group. The guided tour provides a convenient way to quickly learn the basics of using ArcView 1.

To use the data sets from the Digital Atlas of Oklahoma, double-click on the ArcView 1.0 globe icon, then click on "Open" from the "File" menu in the ArcView window. Using the file browser that pops up, go to the \VIEWS subdirectory on the CD-ROM, and select a view file.

The A_STATE.AV view file contains links to data sets suitable for statewide or multi-county views. View files for each county (named with the first eight letters of the county followed by the .AV extension) contain links to data sets suitable for more detailed views. Many of the statewide data sets also are accessible from the county view files, and appear in the bottom one-third of the main view window. The map in the centerfold of the disc front-cover insert shows the counties and county names.

The view files on this disc were created to display selected attributes from the data sets. Many additional attributes are included in the data sets; the view files provided may be used as examples of ways the data sets may be used. For example, only two of the 30 demographic attributes from the 1990 Census are included in the county view files.

The order the themes display on screen may be changed by clicking and holding the mouse button on a theme, and moving it up or down in the main view window. Many themes display too much detail to be usable when displaying an entire county. Users should use the zoom tools to zoom to a smaller area before displaying many themes. Users may perform spatial and logical queries to locate a specific set of attribute characteristics. Users may modify and customize the view files and save them to new files on hard disk or diskette, but the files on the compact disc cannot be modified.

The roads theme in the county view files may be used to locate addresses by clicking the mailbox icon and entering the address in the box to the right of the icon.

The comments shown on the "Theme Properties" screen (accessed by clicking the arrow to the right of the theme in the main view window) provide additional information about using the data sets.

The \A_README.1ST and \DOCUMENT\OVERVIEW.TXT files, both available as icons in the ArcView 1 program group, provide important general information about the organization of the CD-ROM and the individual data sets. Complete documentation files for each data set are stored in the \DOCUMENT\FGDC subdirectory. The documentation files are in Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Metadata format (Federal Geographic Data Committee, 1994).
