 Description: Watershed boundaries for Oklahoma.

 Abstract:

This data set contains watershed boundaries for Oklahoma and
cataloging-unit boundaries for the remaining Arkansas, Red, and
White River basins. This data set was originally published by the
U.S. Geological Survey in the 1994 report titled,"Watershed
boundaries and digital elevation model of Oklahoma", by Cederstrand
and Rea. The watershed boundaries were delineated from a
   hydrologically-conditioned digital elevation model covering
Oklahoma, followed by interactive editing to revise the boundaries
where they were not consistent with hypsography and hydrography
from 1:100,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle
   maps.

 Introduction:

This data set contains watershed boundaries for Oklahoma and
cataloging-unit boundaries for the remaining Arkansas, Red, and
White River basins. The watershed boundaries were delineated from a
   hydrologically-conditioned digital elevation model covering
Oklahoma, followed by interactive editing to revise the boundaries
where they were not consistent with hypsography and hydrography
from 1:100,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle
maps (Cederstrand and Rea, 1995). The cataloging unit boundaries
outside Oklahoma are from Steeves and Nebert (1994).

 Purpose:

This data set was developed to establish standardized watershed
boundaries and 11-digit hydrologic-unit codes for Oklahoma.

 Intended use of data

These data are intended to support watershed-based planning and
other activities for which watershed boundaries based on
   1:100,000-scale mapping are appropriate.

 Supplemental_Information:

Procedures_Used: The watershed boundaries were derived from the
flow-direction data set using automated procedures (Jenson and
Domingue, 1988). The flow-accumulation data set was used in the
selection of watershed pour points or outlets. Outlets were
interactively selected at major stream confluences at cells with
high accumulated flow. The watershed boundaries were converted to a
vector data structure using the ARC/INFO GRID function GRIDPOLY
   (ESRI, 1994).

Some errors were observed when the boundaries derived from the
digital elevation model (DEM) were compared with contours and
streams. The vector boundaries were revised so the watershed
boundaries would be consistent with the contours and streams from
1:100,000-scale quadrangle maps. Errors were corrected
interactively using the ARCEDIT module of ARC/INFO (ESRI, 1994).

Watershed delineation was performed using two separately filled
DEMs. The first covered the Oklahoma panhandle and the Buffalo,
Oklahoma 1:100,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle. The
second DEM covered the state excluding the panhandle. The two data
sets were combined after the necessary revisions were made and
hydrologic-unit codes added. The first 8 digits of the 11-digit
codes are equal to the nationally-standardized system of cataloging
units. The last 3 digits generally begin at 010 and increase by 10
for each watershed downstream within a cataloging unit (USDA,
1995). The data were trimmed to a state boundary derived from
1:100,000 U.S. Department of Commerce TIGER/Line precensus files
(Nebert and Negri, 1990). The resulting watershed map of Oklahoma
was combined with a data set of 8-digit cataloging units derived
from 1:250,000-scale data (Steeves and Nebert, 1994) for the
Arkansas, Red, and White River basins outside of Oklahoma.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) and U.S. Geological Survey offices in Arkansas,
Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, and Texas were contacted to
coordinate the watershed and hydrologic unit codes. Adjustments
were made to the watershed map to ensure the map will be compatible
with watershed map for adjacent states.

The watershed data set published by Cederstrand and Rea (1995) was
projected to the current map projection. Several attribute items
were added and rounding of the AREA_SQ_MI attribute to integers was
   corrected.

 Reviews applied to data:

This electronic report was subjected to the same review standard
that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey reports. Reviewers were
asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute
frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The
reviewers checked the metadata and a_readme.1st files for
   completeness and accuracy.

These data are intended for use at scales equal to or smaller than
1:100,000 within Oklahoma and 1:250,000 outside of Oklahoma. The
cell size of the DEM used to derive the boundaries within Oklahoma
was 60 meters. The extent of this data set is the Arkansas, Red,
  and White River basins.

The hydrologic unit boundaries outside of Oklahoma are cataloging
units derived from 1:250,000-scale data. These boundaries were
adopted from the Steeves and Nebert (1994) data set of hydrologic
units for the conterminous United States.

Overview_Description:
  Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:

The arc attribute SOURCE has six special codes to describe the
linework source. The first four codes were adopted from the Steeves
and Nebert (1994) data set of hydrologic units for the conterminous
United States. Code 1 indicates arcs that were from 1:100,000-scale
GIRAS (U.S. Geological Survey, 1975) files and were internal to the
quadrangle (no map neatlines). Code 2 indicates arcs from the
1:250,000-scale GIRAS files that were internal to the quadrangle.
Code 3 indicates lines from either the 1:100,000-scale or
1:250,000-scale GIRAS source but were part of the neatline that may
be used to connect arcs that do not join cleanly between
quadrangles. Code 4 indicates the arcs within the Oklahoma state
boundary that were derived from the DEM. Code 5 indicates the
Oklahoma state boundary. Code 6 indicates watershed boundaries that
were interactively revised based on 1:100,000-scale hypsography
data from DLG file (U.S. Geological Survey, 1994) and Reach File
Version 3.0 alpha (EPA, 1994), hydrography data.

The DLG version includes one major and one minor line
attribute. The line attribute MAJOR1 contains the SOURCE codes
discussed above and the MINOR1 attribute is always zero.

Several special polygon attributes are used to show the hierarchy
of hydrologic units. HUC11 contains the full 11-digit code for a
watershed. This attribute ends with three blanks if the hydrologic
unit is outside Oklahoma. HUC4 contains the four-digit subregion
code and is the first four digits of HUC11. HUC6 contains the
six-digit accounting-unit code and is the first six digits of
   HUC11. HUC8 contains the eight-digit cataloging-unit code and is
the first eight digits of HUC11. WSCODE contains the three-digit
watershed code and is the last three digits of HUC11. WSCODE is
   always blank outside of Oklahoma.

The DLG version includes two major and minor pairs of polygon
attributes. MAJOR1 contains the first four digits of HUC11, MINOR1
contains the next four digits of HUC11, MAJOR2 contains the last
three digits of HUC11, and MINOR2 contains the area in square
miles. The arc attribute MAJOR1 contains the SOURCE codes discussed
above and the MINOR1 attribute is always zero.
