Description:
U.S. Geological Survey sites with selected streamflow or daily
meteorological values in Oklahoma.
Abstract:
This data set consists of records of stream gages and
meteorological stations maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey,
Oklahoma District. The records contain location, type, and period
of record for 378 stations, but do not contain actual measurement
values such as stream discharge or meteorological parameters. Both
operating and discontinued stations are included in this data
set. This data set is based on a retrieval from the National Water
Information System, December 30, 1996.
Introduction:
This data set consists of records of stream gages and meteorological
stations maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey, Oklahoma
District. The records contain information related to the location,
type, and period of record for 378 stations, but do not contain actual
measurement values such as stream discharge or meteorological
parameters. Both operating and discontinued stations are
included in this data set. This data set is based on a retrieval
from the National Water Information System on December 30, 1996.
Purpose:
The stations included in this data set were chosen based on the
existence of records for daily values of selected parameters.
Stations with daily values of meteorological parameters, stream
discharge, and lake or reservoir contents were retained in the data
set. These selection criteria were designed to identify and
inventory stations with data that may be useful in modeling of the
water and energy cycles.
Supplemental_Information:
Procedures_Used: Station records from the U.S. Geological Survey
National Water Information System (NWIS), were compiled from a
retrieval made from the Oklahoma District NWIS data base on
December 30, 1996. An inventory of daily values was used to
determine the records to be retained in the station file. Records
for stations with daily values of meteorological parameters, stream
discharge, and lake or reservoir contents were retained. Any
station with records of daily values for any parameter shown in
table 1, with any statistic code shown in table 2 were retained in
the file, except daily values of maximum or minimum discharge were
deleted from the daily values inventory. Such values normally are
used in computing daily discharge values and are not used by
themselves.

The data file was loaded into TABLES (ESRI, 1995) and latitude and
longitude were converted to decimal degrees. An ARC/INFO data set
was generated, and projected to the Albers Equal Area map
projection. The ARC/INFO command ADDXY (ESRI, 1995) was used to
add the map projection coordinates to the attribute table.

Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
This electronic report was subjected to the same review standard
that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey reports. Reviewers were
asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute
frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The
reviewers checked the metadata and a_readme.1st files for
completeness and accuracy.

The selection criteria used to identify stations were designed to
identify and inventory stations with data that may be useful in
modeling of the water and energy cycles. The inventory of available
data may or may not be applicable to investigations of a different
nature. For example, stations at which only water-quality data are
collected have been excluded from this data set.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The point attribute table contains 20 attributes for each record.
AGENCY contains the agency code (all records are USGS for
U.S. Geological Survey). SITE contains the station identification
number. DLAT and DLONG contain the latitude and longitude in
decimal degrees. ELEVM and ELEVFT contain the elevation in meters
and feet above the NGVD29. STATE contains the state postal
abbreviation (table 3) where the station is located. STATYPE
contains a station type code (table 4.) STANAME contains the
station name. GMTOFFSET contains the hour offset, from Greenwich
Mean Time of the recorded time at the station. STDTIME contains a
"Y" if the station time switches to daylight savings time. BEGYEAR
and ENDYEAR contain the first and last years of station record.
Stations with ENDYEAR 1996 are considered operating. HUC contains
the eight-digit Hydrologic Unit Code. DAREAKM and DAREASQM contain
the total upstream drainage area, in square kilometers and square
miles. CDAREAKM and CDAREASQM contain the contributing upstream
drainage area, in square kilometers and square miles. REMARKS
contains remarks about the station. X-COORD and Y-COORD contain
the X and Y coordinates of the station in the map projection
coordinate system. The attribute code, -999, indicates data are
missing or unknown.
