Abstract:
This data set contains most of the arcs from the River-Reach File version 3
(RF-3) plus center lines of many of the water bodies in the RF-3. The arcs
that formed water bodies (including lakes, ponds, reservoirs, wide streams)
were removed from this data set. All the arcs in this data set point
downstream. This data set was produced to be used in the ANUDEM software
version 4.4 in conjunction with other data sets to make a digital elevation
model of Oklahoma. This data set includes hydrography for all 8-digit
hydrologic units (cataloging units) that include part of Oklahoma.

Purpose:
This data set was produced to be used in the ANUDEM software version 4.4
in conjunction with other data sets to make a digital elevation model of
Oklahoma. The main purpose of this data set was to provide a downstream-
directed drainage network for use by the drainage enforcement algorithm in
ANUDEM.

This data set was produced to be used in the ANUDEM software version 4.4
in conjunction with other data sets to make a digital elevation model of
Oklahoma. The data set was not intended to meet any other purpose, though it
may be useful for applications needing a downstream-directed drainage network.

Procedures used to create or automate data (Supplemental_Information)
This data set was derived from an early release of RF-3 data (Horn, 1986).
The RF-3 data consists of hydrography derived from 1:100,000-scale USGS data
in DLG format with additional attribute information divided by cataloging
unit. The process used to derive this data set was divided into 8 steps.
STEP I: Two ARC/INFO Macro Language (AML) programs were used to accomplish
this step which was completely automated. The first program
identified the streams and water bodies not connected to an outlet,
removed them from the original data set, and made a separate data
set of them. This data set will be referred to as the "isolated
arcs" data set. The second program identified and removed polygons
from the original data set, and made separate data sets of the
polygons and non-polygon-forming arcs.
STEP II: Other problems with polygons were corrected in this step. Some of
the polygons were islands enclosed by at least one single-line
stream. This occurred frequently in braided stream channels. To
maintain continuity of the hydrologic network, the arcs forming the
main channels were reinserted into the data set of non-polygon-
forming arcs. Polygons that represented inundated areas or isolated
lakes were removed or replaced with center lines if of significant
size. Polygons forming many water bodies were not fully closed.
Arcs were added to the data set to close these polygons.
Errors were discovered in three of the RF-3 data sets during this
step. The first error was on the 1:100,000-scale Muskogee
quadrangle about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of Bald Hill. An
unnamed tributary of Rock Creek and an unnamed tributary of Little
Cane Creek were incorrectly joined at their headwaters. Because of
this error, all the arcs between the confluence of Cloud Creek with
the Arkansas River to the confluence of Snake Creek with the
Arkansas River formed a polygon. The erroneous link was removed and
the remaining arcs were reinserted into the non-polygon-forming data
set.
The second error was that most of the southern part of the Grand
Lake O' the Cherokees was missing. The missing area extended from
the southern end of the lake north to 36 degrees 33 minutes north
latitude. Most of the tributaries and some of the coastline were
included but other parts were not. The missing data were extracted
from the USGS 1:100,000 hydrography DLGs and inserted into the
polygon data set.
The third error was that part of the North Canadian River was
missing from about 97 degrees west longitude to 95 degrees 45
minutes west longitude. Only the main stem of the river was
missing. The missing arcs were extracted from the USGS 1:100,000
hydrography DLGs and inserted into the polygon data set so center
lines could be generated.
STEP III: The program used in this step generated a grid with a 60-meter cell
size from the polygon data set, using POLYGRID (ESRI, 1994) created
a data set of center lines from that grid using GRIDLINE (ESRI,
1994), and then combined the center-line data set with the data set
from the data set of non-polygon-forming arcs.
STEP IV: Center lines for all the remaining double-line streams and lakes
were generated for the polygon data set resulting from STEP I using
the same procedure as in STEP III. The process did not
automatically generate center lines for small water bodies so they
were added interactively using ARCEDIT. Connections between
tributaries and center lines also were added in this step. An AML
program was used in this step to identify the isolated arcs that
needed to be connected.
STEP V: Because the ANUDEM software requires all stream data to be pointing
downstream, an AML program was used to identify all connected arcs
that were pointing upstream and the ARCEDIT FLIP command was used to
reverse the "from" and "to" nodes so that all the arcs would point
downstream.
STEP VI: In this step, all small lakes were removed from the data set of
isolated arcs made in STEP I. Where necessary, the remaining arcs
were reversed using FLIP to point downstream. This data set was
then combined with the data set from STEP V.
STEP VII: In this step, all the data sets were appended into one large data
set using the ARC/INFO command APPEND. All arc attributes except
the standard ARC/INFO arc attributes were dropped during this
process. Arcs that connected one cataloging unit to another
were snapped together. The ARCPLOT command TRACE was used to assure
that all appropriate arcs were connected and to assure that all
connected arcs were pointing downstream.
STEP VIII:A problem with the RF-3 hydrography was discovered when the data set
was used to create a DEM. The problem was that all the arcs within
the area covered by the 1:24,000 Anthon quadrangle had been shifted
approximately 1 kilometer to the west. The incorrect hydrography
was removed and correct data were extracted from the 1:100,000 USGS
hydrography DLG and inserted into this data set. An AML program was
then used to assure that all arcs were pointing downstream.

This data set was derived from the Alpha version of the River Reach File
version 3 which was derived from 1:100,000-scale USGS quadrangle maps. Large
water-body polygons have been replaced by center lines using a gridding
technique with 60-meter cells. An automated process was used to insure all
the arcs connected to the main stream network point downstream. Many smaller
unconnected streams and water bodies were deleted. Larger unconnected arcs
were edited interactively to point downstream. Quality assurance of this data
set has not been extensive, however many errors became apparent when the data
set was used in generating a DEM. These errors have been corrected. Several
errors (mostly missing lines) were noticed after DEM generation. These errors
have not been corrected. All attribute data have been removed.
