Description: Names of geographic features in Oklahoma from
U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute quadrangles in one statewide file.
Abstract:
This data set contains names and locations of physical and cultural
geographic features in Oklahoma from U.S. Geological Survey
7.5-minute quadrangles. The data set was developed from the U.S.
Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System feature names
data base by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6,
GIS Support Team.
The data in this data set, OKNAMES, and in NAMES are the same but
stored differently. The data in OKNAMES, are stored in 1 statewide
file, whereas the data in NAMES are divided into 77 county files
and stored in county subdirectories.
The Geographic Names Information System is based on 1:24,000-scale
topographic maps. This results in many features having multiple
records where the feature extends onto more than one 7.5-minute
quadrangle.
Introduction:
This data set contains names and locations of physical and cultural
geographic features located in Oklahoma from U.S. Geological Survey
7.5-minute quadrangles. The data set was developed from the U.S.
Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (GNIS)
feature names data base (1996) by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) Region 6, GIS Support Team. This data can be
downloaded from via anonymous ftp from the URL:
http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisftp.html.
This results in many features having multiple
records where the feature extends onto more than one 7.5-minute
quadrangle.
Purpose:
This data set can be used to identify geographic features.
Supplemental_Information:
Procedures_Used: The EPA Region 6, GIS Support Team extracted
digital data from the GNIS data base, edited the data, divided data
into county data sets, and created data sets for distribution.
Procedures_Used: The U.S. Geological Survey acquired the digital
data for this report, appended the county data sets into a
statewide data set, and wrote the metadata.
Revisions:

Revision 1.1, 1/1/97, Alan Rea. Digital atlas of Oklahoma version.
Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
The Digital Atlas of Oklahoma was reviewed by 13 technical
reviewers. Because of the large volume of data (nearly 1.3 million
points, lines or polygons divided into 861 separate data sets) the
reviewers could not thoroughly check the accuracy of all geographic
features in the data sets. Reviewers were asked to check the
topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and
statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers were
asked to check the metadata and other documentation files for
completeness and accuracy. Users should exercise caution and
judgment in applying these data, and be aware that errors may be
present in any or all of the digital map data layers.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Each point has eight attributes. The first attribute, ID, is a
unique number used by the U.S. Geological Survey for identification
purposes. The second attribute, NM, is the feature name. The third
attribute, NF, is the secondary feature name, if applicable. The
fourth attribute, TF, is the type of feature, which is sometimes
given as a code. Most of the feature codes for the attribute TF
used in this data set are self explanatory, however some are
shortened and are not self explanatory. The shortened codes and
definitions follow (U.S. Geological Survey, 1987);
civil -- a policital division formed for administrative purposes.
gut -- relatively small waterway connecting larger bodies
of water or other waterways (creek, inlet, slough).
locale -- place where there is or was human activity; it does not
include populated places, mines, and dams.
other -- miscellaneous category for named manmade features that
cannot readily be placed in the other feature classes.
ppl -- populated place or area with clustered or scattered
buildings and a permanent human population.
The fifth and sixth attributes, LAT and LONG, are the latitudinal
and longitudinal coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds. The
seventh and eighth attributes, X-COORD and Y-COORD contain the X
and Y coordinates of the point in the map projection coordinate
system. The latitudinal and longitudinal coordinate in degrees,
minutes, and seconds are stored in the redefined item LL.
The transfer file format for OKNAMES is a dBASE format file. The
point attributes and X and Y coordinates are stored OKNAMES.DBF.
