Description: Surficial geology, Ardmore and Sherman quadrangles, south-central Oklahoma
    Abstract:

This data set consists of digital data and accompanying
documentation of the surficial geology of the 1:250,000-scale Ardmore
and Sherman quadrangles, Oklahoma. The original data are from the
Geologic Map, sheet 1 of 4, included in the Oklahoma Geological Survey
publication, Reconnaissance of the water resources of the Ardmore and
Sherman quadrangles, southern Oklahoma, Hydrologic Atlas 3, Hart,
1974. The geology was compiled by D.L. Hart and R.O. Fay, 1970.

    Purpose:

This report provides general use information on the surficial
geologic units in the Ardmore and Sherman quadrangles, Oklahoma. It
may be inappropriate to use this data set at scales larger than
 1:250,000.

This data set is intended to show the geologic contacts for the
Ardmore and Sherman quadrangles, Oklahoma. It can be used to make
geologic maps, and determine approximate areas and locations of
various geologic units. This data set can be used for studies of
water, environment, soils, sand and gravel, clay pits, gypsum salt
pollution, volcanic ash, caliche, oil and gas, flooding, archaeology,
historical geology, history, ecology, botany, paleontology, zoology,
caves, quarries, dams, farming, and other related topics. The paper
version of this data set has been used to study these topics.

      Procedures_Used:

The black and cyan separates and mylar composite of the source map
(Hart, 1974) were obtained from the Oklahoma Geological Survey. Clear
mylar positives were made from the black and cyan separates. The
separates were scanned with a SCITEX scanner. The resulting SCITEX
files were processed with the SCITEXLINE command (ESRI, 1995) to make
ARC/INFO coverages. Ten stream and geologic contact intersections
that were on both the mylar composite and in the coverages were used
as locations for registration tics. The registration tics were used
to register the coverages to the mylar composite and to add
latitudinal/longitudinal tics from the mylar composite to the
 coverages.

A Transverse Mercator projection with a central meridian of 98
degrees west is the projection of the source map. However, the tics
of the coverages were projected into Universal Transverse Mercator
projection Zone 14 because both of these projections are in the same
family of projections, and because there was a good match between the
 mylar composite and the coverages.

The quadrangle boundaries were generated from the appropriate
latitudes and longitudes, and the state-line boundaries were included
from a 1:100,000 county- and state-boundary coverage (Nebert and
Negri, 1990), replacing the boundaries from the scanned coverages.
Arcs that did not form polygon boundaries, such as faults, were
removed, and each polygon was labeled. Text and single-line rivers
were removed from the hydrography coverage made from the scanned file
of the cyan separate. Lakes were added from the hydrography coverage
to the geology coverage. Polygons were checked to ensure they were
all closed, and attributes were added. The ARC/INFO command DROPLINE
(ESRI, 1995) was used to identify topology errors. A frequency check
was done on the attribute codes to ensure there were no typographical
 errors.

Since alluvium and terrace formations were excluded on the original
map (Hart, 1974), they were excluded in this data set as well.

The coverage was projected into Albers Equal Area projection
(Snyder, 1987). This projection is appropriate for maps of the
conterminous United States because of the visual presentation and
equal-area characteristic, which facilitates areal analysis. This
projection frequently is used for nationwide digital map data sets.
The projection is cast on the North American Datum of 1983. Table 1
 provides map projection information.

This projection slightly distorts shapes and distances (scale) in
order to maintain equal-area properties. Scale is true along the
standard parallels, which are to the north and south of Oklahoma.
Scale distortion in Oklahoma reaches a maximum of slightly less than
one percent at the northern border of the state (Snyder, 1987.)

      Reviews_Applied_to_Data:

This electronic report was subjected to the same review standard
that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey reports. Reviewers were
asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute
frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent.
Reviewers were given digital data sets and paper plots for checking
against the source maps to verify the linework and attributes. The
reviewers checked the metadata and a_readme.1st files for completeness
 and accuracy.

The ASCII approximations for the polygon attribute "FM" are stored
in "\geology.lut", which is presented in Table 2. The file
"\geology.lut" is comma delimited and there are single quotes around
text strings. There are two field types in this table: C = character
and I = integer. "FMNUM" and "FM" are attributes in both the polygon
attribute table of the coverage and "\geology.lut". "FMNUM" is stored
as the first major polygon code in the nonproprietary Digital Line
Graph (DLG) version of this data set. Each "FM" in the state
corresponds to a unique integer "FMNUM", but "\geology.lut" is only
 for this data set.

Additional surficial geology data sets are available for the rest
of Oklahoma. The source maps for the three counties of the Oklahoma
panhandle are at a scale of 1:125,000. The source maps for the data
sets for the rest of the state are at a scale of 1:250,000.

The data set "\faults.gz" contains the geologic faults for the
 Ardmore and Sherman quadrangles, Oklahoma.

  Use_Constraints:

There is uncertainty in the position of geologic contacts from the
field mapping process, the original map preparation, and the
digitizing process. The boundaries of water bodies, in particular,
were scan digitized from a different separate, and some misalignment
between those lines and the geologic contacts was indicated. This
misalignment may be as much as about 0.05 map inches. It may be
inappropriate to use this data set at scales larger than 1:250,000.

  Overview_Description:
    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:

The main polygon attribute of interest is "FM" that is an ASCII
character approximation of the map symbol for the name of geologic
unit or formation. Each "FM" in the state corresponds to a unique
integer "FMNUM". "FMNUM" and "FM" are attributes in both the polygon
attribute table of the coverage and "\geology.lut", which accompanies
the DLG version of this data set. The polygon attribute "MAJOR1" is
equivalent to "FMNUM". "MAJOR1" is found in both the DLG and ARC/INFO
versions of this data set. The polygon attribute "MINOR1" is always
 zero.

An ASCII approximation of the explanation of the source document
(Hart, 1974) follows. Terms surrounded by quotation marks are
italicized in the source document. The formations are listed in order
of age, youngest first. The curly brackets and boxes shown on the
source document are approximated to help the user understand this
representation. The characters inside the boxes are equivalent to
"FM". Geologic Periods are listed on the left side as well as under
the boxes. Geologic Period subdivisions are listed on the left side
within the Geologic Periods. Geologic Groups are listed on the right
side. The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used
herein are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not
necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The stratigraphic nomenclature was separated into different areas
on the source document. Stratigraphic nomenclature for the entire
area covered in the source document was listed from Quaternary to
Upper Pennsylvanian Periods. The Ardmore Basin stratigraphic
nomenclature for the Middle Pennsylvanian Period was listed beside
nomenclature for the remaining area. The Arbuckle Mountains and the
Ouachita Mountains stratigraphic nomenclature for the Lower
Pennsylvanian to Middle Ordovician Periods were listed side-by-side.
The Arbuckle Mountains stratigraphic nomenclature back to the
 Pre-Cambrian Era continued by itself.

The stratigraphic nomenclature cannot be listed side-by-side in
this metadata due to space limitations. This metadata will list the
general area nomenclature first. The Ardmore Basin stratigraphic
nomenclature will be listed next. The Arbuckle Mountains nomenclature
will be listed third and the Ouachita Mountains nomenclature will be
listed last. Each section will be titled to prevent confusion.

The arc attributes "LTYPE" and "MAJOR1" indicates the line type.
"LTYPE" is only included in the ARC/INFO version of the data set. If
"LTYPE" is "QB" then "MAJOR1" will be "0", and the line is part of the
quadrangle boundary but not part of the state boundary. If "LTYPE" is
"FM" then "MAJOR1" will be "1", and the line is a formational contact.
If "LTYPE" is "OW" then "MAJOR1" will be "2," and the line is an open
water contact. If "LTYPE" is "SB" then "MAJOR1" will be "3", and the
line is part of the Oklahoma state boundary. The arc attribute
 "MINOR1" is always zero.
