 Abstract:
 
   This data set contains land-surface elevation contours in meters
   and feet above the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 for the
   77 Oklahoma counties. The contours and elevations were derived from
   1:100,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graph
   data sets.
 
 Introduction:
 
   This data set contains land surface elevation contours in meters
   and feet above the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929
   (NGVD29) for the 77 Oklahoma counties. The contours and elevations
   were derived from 1:100,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey Digital
   Line Graph data sets (1994). The contour data sets for all Oklahoma
   quadrangles were combined, and trimmed to the county boundaries to
   form a data set for each county. Elevation contours do not
   necessarily match at the boundaries of the quadrangles used to
   construct this data set.
 
   The contour interval is 10 meters for most of the state, 20 meters
   for about the eastern one-third of the state, and 5 meters for the
   Alva quadrangle in north-central Oklahoma.
 
 Purpose:
 
   This data set shows land-surface elevations in Oklahoma counties.

   Procedures_Used:
 
   Process_description: The DLG data sets were acquired on 9-track
   tape. These data now may be downloaded by anonymous ftp from,
   ftp://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/DLG/100K/. The directories are
   organized alphabetically by quadrangle name. The DLG data sets are
   located in the 'hypsography' subdirectory.
   
   The digital data sets were converted from a DLG format to ARC/INFO
   7.0.2 format. The 46 digital data sets of land surface elevation
   contours for Oklahoma were joined using the ARC/INFO command APPEND
   (ESRI, 1995). The elevation contours for each county were extracted
   using county boundaries and the ARC/INFO command CLIP (ESRI, 1995),
   with a fuzzy tolerance of 10 meters. The resultant 77 data sets
   were processed with the ARC/INFO BUILD command (ESRI, 1995). The
   major and minor pair codes were recoded and the data set was
   documented using ARC/INFO DOCUMENT.AML (ESRI, 1995).

 Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
  
   The Digital Atlas of Oklahoma was reviewed by 13 technical
   reviewers. Because of the large volume of data (nearly 1.3 million
   points, lines or polygons divided into 861 separate data sets) the
   reviewers could not thoroughly check the accuracy of all geographic
   features in the data sets. Reviewers were asked to check the
   topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and
   statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers were
   asked to check the metadata and other documentation files for
   completeness and accuracy. Users should exercise caution and
   judgment in applying these data, and be aware that errors may be
   present in any or all of the digital map data layers.

   Three attributes are associated with each line. The first
   attribute, ELEV_M, contains the land-surface elevation in meters
   above the NGVD29. The second attribute, ELEV_FT, contains
   land-surface elevations expressed in feet above NGVD29. The third
   attribute, TYPE, contains codes indicating: the line is an amended
   contour with the elevation added by interpolation (A), the line is
   a coincident feature (C), the line is a depression contour (D), the
   elevation of the line contains a decimal fraction (F), the line is
   an index contour (I), the line is a closure line (L), the line is a
   carrying contour (M), the line is a supplemental contour (S), or
   the line is an underwater contour (U). More than one code may be
   present for a line.
 
   The attribute, ELEV_M, in the DLG version is stored in the first
   major code (MAJOR1) and ELEV_FT is stored in the first minor code
   (MINOR1). TYPE is stored in the second major code (MAJOR2) as
   integers. Following are the statewide frequencies of occurrence
   for the codes and combination of codes of the attribute TYPE and
   representative integers in the second major code (MAJOR2). The
   second minor code (MINOR2) is equal to 0.
